A TEENAGE boy was subjected to a terrifying night-time street robbery in Risca when he was attacked by two hooded thugs who stabbed and punched him.
Joseph Cashman, (pictured) 17, from Risca, was walking in the town near the Kwik Save superstore just after midnight on Sunday morning when he was set upon two men. He said: "A car suddenly pulled up with two boys and three girls in and one of the boys asked, 'Got a light mate?'.
"The next thing they started shouting at me, 'Give us your gold!' because I was wearing a 21-inch solid gold neck chain and nine-inch solid gold bracelet.
"The two boys came at me with a screwdriver with a six-inch blade and a large gear stick safety lock and started beating me up.
"I screamed out as I was stabbed in the hand with the screwdriver and punched in the face and they hit me down to the floor.
"One of the girls got out of the car and shouted, 'Get the bracelet!'. "I didn't surrender though and fought back and then tried to run away but they managed to pull the chain from around my neck and get away with the bracelet before they sped off in their car."
Joseph, a factory worker, said the jewellery had been recently valued at over £1,200. "I couldn't see their faces because they had the hoods pulled down over their heads. "I would say they're aged between 16 and 18-years-old, about 5ft 8in tall and between nine-and-a-half and ten stone.
"The car they were in was a burgundy Ford Escort or Orion and the boys spoke with Newport accents.
"It was really a really scary experience and I was terrified."
Joseph was left with a cut hand and a bruised jaw but decided against going to hospital for treatment.
His mother, Bridie Cashman, said: "I know it cost him a lot of money to pay for his jewellery and he worked hard for it but I'm just glad he's okay because it could have been so much worse."
Risca police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information should contact officers on 01633 612391.
