SADDLE up and experience the woodlands and mountain trails of South Wales on horseback.
The area has got loads of pony-trekking and riding centres to take advantage of the miles of trails and open spaces.
One of the most picturesque is the Llangorse Riding and Rope Centre, near Brecon. It boasts 25 miles of its own trails, as well as access to the Brecon Beacons National Park. Catering for beginners and experienced riders of all ages, it is a great day out for everybody.
Another is at the Ponderosa centre in Llanwern village. Owners Alison Davies and her husband, Richard, both started out as competitive showjumpers before moving into teaching when their reputations created a big demand for their skills.
They started in New Inn but had to expand, and in 2000 they found their Eldorado, or rather their Ponderosa.
Barn Farm in Llanwern village, with its 110 acres of fields and woodland, provided the ideal home, but not without some serious work.
Alison said: "The farm had not been maintained for a long time and it was in a terrible state.
The fields had been used by travellers and fly-tippers. The Argus reported on the state of the farm, which was blighting the area.
"Since we took on the land we have renovated the place and the transformation is quite spectacular," the couple said.
The centre has more than 30 horses and ponies and provides lessons for riders of all abilities and ages.
"We start with riders as young as five and our oldest beginner was in their 60s. We teach all levels, from total beginners to competition riders and those going for professional exams," Alison said.
Graduates of the school have gone on to represent Wales and the Oxford University equestrian team.
Alison said: "Gwent has produced several Olympic riders over the years and we are part of that tradition. In Britain there are 2 million riders and it's getting more popular all the time."
Ponderosa is also working with Disability Sport Cymru and is aiming to provide more facilities for disabled riders.
"Part of the sport's appeal is the rewarding relationship between the horse and rider, and with children and the disabled this seems to really build confidence and bring them out of themselves.
"It really is an activity for everyone as well as building fitness, confidence and co-ordination the sport provides a challenge, is a great social activity and gives access to the great outdoors."
All facilities are approved by the British Horse Society and Newport council. For more information on Ponderosa call 01633 411777, on Llangorse riding centre, 01874 658272.
