MARTYN Williams becomes Wales' third captain in as many games in Saturday's Six Nations Championship wooden spoon decider against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Williams takes over from Jonathan Humphreys, who has failed a fitness test on the shoulder injury he suffered in the injury playing for Bath against Saracens last Saturday.

Bridgend's Gareth Williams, who was nowhere in the rankings during the autumn internationals, makes his first Wales start after going on as a replacement against Italy and England.

The absence of Humphreys left the way clear for Williams to step into a role Wales coach Steve Hansen is grooming him for earlier than expected.

The openside flanker is Wales' most consistent forward and has been captain at club level before.

Now he faces the difficult task of leading Wales in the cauldron of Murrayfield. Colin Charvis, who had such a disastrous experience as captain against Italy, fails to regain his place in the team, though he showed improved form as a replacement against England.

Gavin Thomas remains at number eight despite his inexperience in the position. He played there against England when he was hardly a runaway success there.

The only other change in the Welsh team is at outside half where Stephen Jones returns. He missed the first two championship matches because of a broken thumb he suffered playing for Llanelli.

Despite the relative success of Ceri Sweeney against England, Jones remains Hansen's number one outside half.

He is a proven international in the position and has a strong kicking and defensive game. Iestyn Harris, who started against Italy, is on the bench which means there is no place in the 22 for Sweeney which is a bit harsh.

Ben Evans remains, though, he was coming under pressure to hold his place at tight-head prop, but Martyn Madden, in line to replace him, has also been ruled out with shoulder trouble.

Gethin Jenkins impressed there as a second-half replacement against England, but he is a loose head.

Matthew Watkins, the former Newport centre now with Llanelli, remains on the bench after going on as a replacement against Italy and England.
