BOXING champion Gary Lockett hopes to run a half marathon to help raise funds for little Amber Hartland.

On Tuesday the Argus revealed that Amber, who is just 11 months old, has been diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder infantile tay-shchs.

The disease affects the nervous system and can lead to blindness and deafness before death.

Her parents Lesley Gronow, 38, and Nick Hartland, 26, of Ellwood Path, Cwmbran, fear she could die by the age of four unless she is put on a potential drug trial in America.

Doctors in America have expressed an interest in Amber's case and the couple, along with family and friends, are making plans for a variety of fundraising activities to get the cash needed to take Amber to the US. The couple are also in the process of getting charity registration to help with the fund-raising efforts.

Mr Lockett, 26, who won the WBO intercontinental light middle weight championship last February, went to Llantarnam Comprehensive School with Mr Hartland.

The pair still keep in touch - and when Mr Lockett learned of Amber's plight he was determined to help.

He said: "When I found out about Amber's condition I said I would do what I can."

The professional boxer, who lives in Ton Road: "I am hoping to do one in the next month or so if I can find one to enter. I don't know how much I can raise but I am going to contact business people I know and sports people to see what they can do."

Mr Hartland said his friend's offer was touching.

He said: "I know Gary has a lot planned for us and it's brilliant he wants to help out. He is just one of many who have offered to help."

Amber's 28-year-old godmother, Lisa Davies, of Abbey Road, Cwmbran, is organising the fundraising. Anyone wishing to donate money or help raise funds can ring her on 01633 874000.
