THE annual Big Black Mountains Challenge will once again be organised by the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team as their main fundraiser.
The team is frequently called out by Gwent Police and neighbouring forces to search the mountains for missing people.
It consists of 50 volunteers who train on a regular basis to provide a service on a pager system 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
The fundraising event co-ordinator is team member Len Harbottle, of Monmouth.
He said: "Recently we have seen an increase in the number of cases where we are assisting the police in looking for frail and vulnerable people who have wandered from their homes."
The event will take place on May 17, in a circular anti-clockwise direction around Llanthony Priory.
There is a choice of three testing walks, 43 kilometres, 27km or 16km, which take in 15 summits over 660 metres amid breathtaking scenery.
