A YOUNG father of two, enjoying a night out with friends, died after a collision with a car. Paul Osborne, 27, pictured, was crossing Old Hereford Road, near King Henry VIII school - just minutes from his house at Old Barn Way, Abergavenny - when the accident happened at 1.30am on Sunday.
The former King Henry VIII school pupil was sitting on a wall next to the road with a friend, but then left his friend and was in collision with a Vauxhall Nova as he crossed.
The friend administered first aid until an ambulance arrived, then Mr Osborne was taken by ambulance to Nevill Hall Hospital, but died within half an hour.
Mr Osborne, a machine driver with a plant hire company, leaves son Damon, five, and daughter Chloe, three.
Dad Roger Osborne, 55, who works for a road contractor, said: "He went out for a drink in town and the next thing he's dead.
"I cannot understand how it happened. It wasn't on a bad bend, or a bad road. It's a big wide road.
"It's a terrible shock. We are still waiting for him to come home. He was a good boy who loved his shooting and motorbikes."
Jo Bull, a student nurse from Tredegar, Paul Osborne's partner of 18 months, said the couple planned to marry.
She added: "I felt I had found my soul mate. We've had a whale of a time.
"We always reckoned we would get married when I qualify as a nurse in 2006. I loved him to bits and he loved me to bits.
"I am devastated and I just cannot believe it. I don't know how anyone lives on after a loss like this.
"He loved life and he loved his kids and he was teaching his two nephews to box. He'd just got promoted and he'd worked hard for it.
"He had a lot of friends and many people will miss him. As soon as you talked to him he became a friend for life."
Mr Osborne is also survived by his mother, Janet, and sister Julie, 30.
The driver, an Abergavenny man, is helping police with their inquiries. Officers are also appealing for witnesses. Call 01633 244 999.
