TORCH Songs are particularly sultry ballads, named for their slow-burning quality. Judy Garland, Peggy Lee and Julie London have all melted hearts with songs from the canon such as Cry me a River, Fever and Is that All there Is.
They tend either to celebrate romance or lament heartbreak, but they always create a mood related to affairs of the heart.
Such sounds are unheard on South Wales' club scene but as of Wednesday, February 5, Dynamo Dresden will present weekly evenings full of them.
Tara (pictured) of Dynamo Dresden will sing with backing from some of Cardiff's finest jazz musicians including Adam Stangrove of Smokehand on double bass and keyboard player Andy Powell.
They will occupy one of the most recent editions to clubland, Soda Bar which is on St Mary Street.
The Soda bar is ideally suited to such moody sounds, being small and underground. Torch Music starts in the Soda Bar on Wednesday, February 5. Admission is £4 for non members or £2 to members.
