GET on your bike and join one of the UK's oldest cycling clubs, celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Having reached its half century Newport Phoenix is going from strength to strength. After a great 2002 when it hosted the prestigious UK Crit race the club is preparing events for their Jubilee year.
Phoenix has been at the forefront of making Gwent an area of excellence for cycling, a reputation that will only increase when the velodrome opens its doors in the Autumn. During the winter Phoenix meets at Caerleon comprehensive for circuit training and on Sunday morning at Caerleon Common for a long ride.
Gareth Oakley, a spokesman and rider for the club, said: "The rides are a great way of getting out and seeing the countryside. You're getting fit but you're not stuck in a gym, you're out there in the fresh air enjoying the scenery. We have trips to other parts of the country and there's always something coming up in the calendar ."
The club's membership of 65 ranges from nine-years-old to 76. The club is keen to promote cycling to the young and its Phoenix Flyers youth section has had a lot of success.
One future star is current under-10 Welsh Champion Louise Unsworth from Cwmbran. Louise said: "I have been cycling at the club for three years and I really enjoy it. Last year I won the Welsh under-10 championship, I was so excited. Cycling gets you fit and it's great fun, all kids should try it."
But the club is not just for youngsters as 76-year-old Stanley Lewis will tell you. Stanley said: "I retired from competition last year but I am still a keen cyclist. I ride with the club every week and I still get a lot out of it."
Roy Ellis, 65, another senior member of Phoenix, said: "What I love about the sport is the camaraderie, even in competition you often travel as a group and have to work together. We go off on trips together and always have a great time."
