CRISIS-HIT Tredegar Rugby Club may soon have new owners after battling for survival since the company running the club were struck off and dissolved.

The action occurred last June after the company, Tredegar Rugby Football Club Ltd., registered at Commercial Street, Tredegar, failed to file any documents to Companies House.

The company had been formed to manage the 110-year-old club's affairs in August 2000 after previous problems, but since being dissolved elected officials have been responsible for its day-to-day running.

The club, promoted from Division Two last season, have continued to fulfil their Welsh League First Division fixtures under coaches brothers Robert and Gareth Johnstone. They have won five and drawn one of their 19 league and cup games this season.

Club team manager Paul Woods confirmed today that the club were in talks with parties interested in forming a new limited company to run the club's affairs and said he was hopeful of a positive outcome within a "week or two."

"There was a meeting of club members on Sunday and they have been asked not to say anything so if I said something it would look pretty bad," said Woods.

"But we are looking to put the club on the right track and keep it on the right track, hopefully within the week.

"There are T's to be crossed and I's to be dotted and as soon as something has been decided I'll be up front with you."

A spokesman for companies house explained: "Tredegar Rugby Football Club Ltd. were struck off in June 2002 and it would have been because they did not file any company documents.

"That does not stop them playing rugby.

"If you transact your business with a club that is not a limited company then you transact your business with the people running that club and they have full liability for any debts they incur while they are transacting that business."

Tredegar do not own its club headquarters in Park Hill and the Recreation Ground they play on is owned by Blaenau Gwent council.
