A SCHOOLBOY critically injured in a road accident last year is making a miraculous recovery.

Six-year-old Lewys Evans suffered serious head injuries when he was involved in a collision with a car while riding his bike, just yards from his home, in September.

His parents, Nigel Evans, and Lynne Davies, of Pentwyn, Ebbw Vale, believed he might not survive and prepared themselves for the worst.

Lewys was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, in Abergavenny, and was then transferred to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he lay in the intensive care unit for ten days.

But now, just four months later, Lewys is back at home, has learnt to walk again and has even returned to school at All Saints RC Primary on a part-time basis.

Now his mother says she is amazed by his progress, after months of physiotherapy and speech therapy.

Lewys attends school for just an hour a day at the moment, and will gradually build up the time he spends there.

"He is doing really well at the moment," she told the Argus.

"He has to go for physiotherapy every week and he has to have a Lycra sleeve on his left arm to try to stop the shakiness he has.

"He is also having some speech therapy as his speech is slower than it use to be."

She added that when Lewys left hospital he could not walk - but within two days of being at home with his five brothers and sisters he had learnt to walk again.

"Just being at home really helped him on," she said.

Mrs Davies also said her family had a wonderful Christmas and that it was a very special day.

"He has had lots of presents ever since he went into hospital anyway - he has been really spoilt!" she added.

The family praised both hospitals for all their care and support - and thanked teachers and pupils at Lewys' school, who visited him and sent him cards while he was in hospital.
