CWMBRAN golden boy Jamie Arthur (pictured) will make his eagerly-awaited professional boxing debut on March 22 - but he's missed out on a Welsh baptism of fire.

Wales' Commonwealth Games gold medallist has been installed on the Scott Harrison WBO featherweight title bill in Glasgow.

And although lightweight Arthur admits to being slightly disappointed that he won't be making a home debut, he's looking firmly on the bright side.

"I must admit that I am a little bit disappointed that my first pro fight won't be in front of all the Welsh fans but at least this will give me a chance to get rid of any nerves by getting the first one over with," said Arthur, who has yet to have his opponent confirmed.

"It's obviously a nervous time for any fighter making his professional debut and everyone keeps telling me what a huge step up it is. But I have had some 85 fights as an amateur, so I know what things are all about."

"It's all suddenly happened very fast," he added. "I was asked to go up to Glasgow for a Press conference on Thursday and on the way, I got a call saying the fight was on for March."

Arthur, who shot to national fame in Manchester last summer when he became the first Welshman since Howard Winstone in 1958 to strike Games gold, was paraded in a Class of 2003 by big-time promoter Frank Warren.

"These are some of the most talented young fighters in Europe," said Sports Network supremo Warren, who had also assembled the likes of Wayne Elcock and John McDermott as part of a 13-strong up-and-coming cast.

"They all have the potential to be world champions, and I expect them to fulfil it.

"Over the years a lot of Sports Network's fighters have become millionaires and the next generation of well-paid fighters are sat here today."

As soon as Arthur has stepped out in Glasgow, Warren looks set to give him a Wales 'homecoming' by installing him on a Joe Calzaghe bill.

Newbridge southpaw Calzaghe is likely to take on the man he should have fought last month, Thomas Tate.

Warren is believed to be trying to secure the Cardiff International Arena for Calzaghe's 13th defence of his WBO super-middleweight crown, possibly on April 26.
