TORFAEN'S bravest police officers took a bow last night at a divisional commendation evening.
Twenty-two Gwent police officers of B Division received commendation citations for exceptional work. Among them were constables Huw Jones and Michael Gore, who rescued an unconscious man from his burning home in Abergavenny on November 3.
Chief Inspector John Oliver, commander of B Division, said: "Due to the speed of their response, the officers attended the property before the fire service had arrived.
"They could see that the kitchen was well ablaze and when they looked through the living room window they saw a man lying on the floor.
"Unable to get in through the kitchen door, the officers tried another route. They managed to force the front door, entered the blazing house and dragged the man out," CI Oliver said.
"Fortunately he was still alive. They then tended to his injuries until an ambulance arrived.
"For their courageous actions in rescuing him without regard for their own safety, I commend them."
