GLAMORGAN'S Matthew Maynard is delighted to have been included in England's provisional World Cup squad of 30 but does not expect to make the final 15 when it is named on December 31.
Maynard, 37 in March, has been out of the international reckoning for some time now, though he has led England in the Super Sixes competition.
The last of his 14 one-day international appearances for England was in 2000 while the last of his four Tests was in 1994.
But despite a highest one-day international score of only 41 against Pakistan in 1996, he is in the provisional party of for February's World Cup in Zimbabwe.
"I'm delighted. It's nice to be in the thoughts of the selectors, but it's getting into the final 15 that counts and I'm not holding my breath," said the former Glamorgan skipper, who helped the county to last season's Norwich Union League trophy.
"I've always said the only reason for carrying on playing is the belief you are still good enough to play for your country and I've always retained that belief.
"But the squad contains a lot of young players, which is right, and I don't expect to make the final line-up unless there is maybe an injury to one of the more experienced players and they decide they want an experienced replacement.
"I've had my hopes built up over the years and had them dashed so I'm not expecting anything. If it happens it happens."
Despite England's Ashes disasters Maynard believes the one day squad assembled Down Under will do well in the triangular series against Australia and Sri Lanka.
"It is a different squad for the main part than the Ashes squad and won't carry any baggage from that series," said Maynard.
"They are in the driving seat for the World Cup with the chance to impress and book places and that's a great incentive.
"I hope they do well as English cricket could do with a boost at the moment but I suppose if they do my chances of playing in the World Cup will be even slimmer."
Glamorgan's Robert Croft surprisingly has not made the provisional squad.
England are facing growing problems ahead of their final selection with a growing injury list. Already deprived of left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, who broke his left wrist shortly before the second Test in Adelaide nearly three weeks ago, England's slow bowling options are disrupted by Jeremy Snape being ruled out for the next month with a fractured thumb.
England will have to take definitive decisions on their fitness before they hand their final World Cup party over to the International Cricket Council.
England also have injury worries over all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.
