MUSIC-lovers will be rocking around the Christmas tree this year after developers received final planning approval for the Newport City Live Arena.

The £1 million live music event was on hold until Welsh historic monuments conservation body Cadw approved the plans to transform the Grade II listed former Odeon cinema in Clarence Place into a multi- purpose events and performance centre.

It is hoped that the 2,240 capacity arena will attract artists from all over the world as well as showcasing local musical talent.

Owners of the venue, former Chepstow Racecourse commercial manager Richard Perry and his wife Rhiannon, pushed ahead with booking artists over the Christmas period while waiting for Cadw's final decision.

While the exterior of the 1930s' art deco cinema has remained largely untouched, workers have been busy transforming the inside of the building - the top floor of which has been left derelict since the cinema closed 20 years ago.

The old interior has been ripped out, the balcony restored and a 24ft x 34ft stage has been installed.

The city's biggest live music venue is set to open its doors to the public on December 19 with a wide range of acts included in its opening bill.

A rock 'n' roll extravaganza featuring sixties legends Gerry Marsden from Gerry and the Pacemakers, Mike Pender from The Searchers and Brian Poole from the Tremeloes takes place on Friday December 20.

The following night features Red Dragon FM's Help A South Wales Child Christmas Party which promises top Pepsi Chart Act guests.

Other artists booked this season include S Club Heaven, winners of a Top Tribute Band Award in 2001, and a New Year's eve party featuring Vogue and the Queen tribute band Mercury.

Mr Perry said he was delighted to see the project nearing completion.

He said: "We had always hoped that the building would be ready in time to host the Christmas festivities and so are thrilled to have overcome this final hurdle."

Tickets for all events are available from Monday December 2 from the box office at Newport Rugby Club.
