THE South Wales Fire Service has warned people to remain vigilant during the eight day strike, and to pay extra attention to things which may cause fires such as: unattended cooking; unsafe use of candles, matches and lighters; electrical and heating equipment; burning of rubbish or garden waste; smoking.
They say it is vital to have a fully working smoke alarm. Change the batteries now. At night turn off all electrical equipment that is not designed to stay on. Protect open fires with a fireguard. Close all doors and keep your escape route free of obstruction.
Make a fire action plan - how to get your family out of the house, where to meet, what to do if your escape route is blocked by smoke. Do not re-enter your home to collect belongings.
Tell friends, family and neighbours to do the same to protect their homes. Drive carefully.
