THE village of Undy is set to benefit from a new nursery, thanks to a £300,000 cash windfall from the National Assembly.

Monmouthshire council has secured funding from the Assembly for the new nursery at Undy Primary School, which will be a permanent structure on the school site in Pennyfarthing Lane.

And the Assembly has made £50,000 available during the current financial year for preparatory work.

Education officials at County Hall working with school staff have already started looking at potential plans for the nursery, which the council proposes to open in September next year.

Around 52 part-time places will be created at the nursery for children from the age of three.

Councillor Rob Griffiths, cabinet member for lifelong learning, said: "I am very pleased that the Assembly has made the funding available. We are aware that there has been a need for a nursery in Undy and Magor, and I am sure it will be welcomed by the local community."

Monmouthshire council has started the statutory consultation process on the nursery, and the proposal is subject to a positive outcome of the process.

If no objections to the proposal are received by the end of the consultation period on December 23, it is hoped the official go-ahead will be given by the assembly in the spring.

The plan for a new nursery was developed as part of the council's Strategic Review of Education.

End.
