AS firefighters prepare to down tools for the first time in 25 years we investigate what happens now and offer advice on how to stay safe

Q: What happens if I dial 999 and report a fire? A: The 999 emergency number remains the same. The request for help will be diverted to one of three main police control rooms in Bridgend, Carmarthen and Colwyn Bay, who are co-ordinating all calls. Senior fire officers and military staff there will decide whether a Green Goddess should be deployed.

Q:Who will respond to calls? A: Emergency cover will be provided by RAF personnel crewing Green Goddess fire-engines.

Q:Where are the Green Goddesses based? A: The South Wales headquarters for the emergency cover will be at Maindy Barracks, Cardiff. In addition, some part-time firefighters who are members of the non-striking Retained Firefighters Union (RFU) will provide cover in their areas. These include some staff in Abergavenny and Blaenavon.

Q: What happens to road accident victims trapped in their cars? A: Some Green Goddesses are equipped with cutting equipment and breathing apparatus, but the service they can offer is limited.

Q: Will the Green Goddesses be escorted by the police? A: Yes, police cars will be escorting the emergency vehicles, although they are now equipped with flashing blue lights and radios.
