TWO Gwent-based businesses have taken top honours in the inaugural Caerphilly Business Forum Awards.

G-Plas, of Crumlin, was named Business of the Year (for 21-50 employees), sponsored by Broomfield & Alexander. Runners-up were Solar Windows, of Caerphilly, and Joyner P A (Cymru) at Risca.

New Business of the Year, sponsored by Venture Wales, is Classic Canine Cuts, Blackwood.

Runners-up were Chilli Penguin Stoves, Caerphilly and Siache, Blackwood.

G-Plas, makers of rigid plastic sheets, was started in 1998 and has cornered the market, having grown to become the UK's only manufacturer in its field.

Described by judges as 'outstanding', the G-Plas team were chosen as winners for their professionalism, vision, innovation and commitment to Caerphilly borough.

Judges of the New Business of the Year category were given the task of finding an entrepreneur whose skills in business planning and management were coupled with ambition and vision.

They said Clare Hyde at Classic Canine Cuts more than matched each of these criteria.

At her dog-grooming parlour in Blackwood, she has seen the business grow dramatically and enjoys a reputation to match.

Councillor Rob Gough, one of the judges, said: "G-Plas and Classic Canine Cuts are worthy winners.

The management team share two important things in common - a passion for their business and the will to succeed."
