Ashley Giles reflected on England's remarkable second-day fightback against Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes series and vowed: "We'll fight for every run and every wicket". England put a disastrous opening day at The Gabba firmly behind them by bowling the world champions out for 492. Australia's last eight wickets fell for just 128 runs and by the close of play England were 158 for one in reply.

Michael Vaughan fell for 33 but Marcus Trescothick (63no) and Mark Butcher (51no) completed a morale-boosting day for the tourists.

Giles, who took four for 101 when claiming the wickets of Ricky Ponting, Darren Lehmann, Andy Bichel and Glenn McGrath, said: "We may not be as talented as this Australian team but, if nothing else, we've got plenty of character and we will fight for every run and every wicket."

England still trail by 334 runs - and need 293 to avoid the follow on - so Giles knows that more of the same will be needed when Trescothick and Butcher resume tomorrow. "As soon as you take your foot off the gas they will hit you hard," warned Giles.

"We've got to dig in again. It has been a great partnership between Marcus and Butch but now they need to do it all again.

"We need to get close to the Aussies' score. It's a good wicket; we hope it stays that way for a while and we can get a good score on the board.

"It was fantastic today. After the disappointment of yesterday when we let ourselves down a bit with our bowling and fielding we really fought back today and competed."

On his own performance, Giles said: "I enjoyed it. I thought we bowled pretty well yesterday without much luck. I hope I get a few more (wickets) in the series. I will treasure every one one of them.

"We were pretty low last night after a long hot day in the field but it's a lot better now. The guys are very focused.

"We knew we let ourselves down in some departments and we've put it right today. "
