GLAMORGAN paceman Simon Jones makes his Ashes debut against Australia in the First Test in Brisbane tomorrow.

But England will be without Lancashire allrounder Andy Flintoff because he is not yet fully fit while Kent batsman Robert Key is the other member of the 13 set to sit the game out.

Australia have also announced their side with top fast bowler Brett Lee omitted on grounds of loss of form after a major elbow operation last year.

Jones forms the fast bowling spearhead with Andy Caddick and Matthew Hoggard, Durham's Steve Harmison the unlucky fast bowler left out.

England deliberated long and hard about Flintoff, who only returned to action this week after two months on the sidelines recovering from a hernia operation, before prefering fellow all-rounder White.

Both players have featured in one game on the tour after White was called in as cover for Flintoff from Adelaide, where he was playing grade cricket.

The decision between the pair was made after coach Duncan Fletcher and captain Nasser Hussain consulted with physio Kirk Russell.

Flintoff, who admitted being stiff after delivering 18 overs during the opening day of this week's drawn tour match with Queensland, struggled in the nets this morning and England coach Duncan Fletcher admitted then he was a concern, but said he needed more time to consider his options.

Eventually they decided not to risk Flintoff, going instead for White who is a fine player against spin and will relish the challenge of facing Australia's Shane Warne.

White scored 94 in his last Test appearance against India before being injured.

Lee has been overlooked by Australia with Jason Gillespie proving his fitness after a month out with calf trouble.

Andy Bichel, who impressed during Australia's recent 3-0 rout of Pakistan in Sharjah, retains his place and plays on his home town ground.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who has had an elbow infection, has also been passed fit.

England: Trescothick, Vaughan, Butcher, Hussain, Crawley, Stewart, White, Giles, Jones, Caddick, Hoggard. Australia: S Waugh (captain), Gilchrist, Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn, Lehmann, Gillespie, Warne, Bichel, McGrath.
