PONTYPOOL captain Mark Jones is set to make his return to action against some of the biggest men he could have imagined!

Pooler have landed a coup and will be playing the touring Fijian national team at The Park (7pm).

And it is likely that coach Steve Jones will call on his namesake to have a run-out at least, after seven weeks out with a dislocated elbow.

The match could also see new Pontypool signings Jamie Webb, a utility back who plays at centre or outside-half, having a run plus loose-head prop Greg Burns, who signed from Ebbw Vale ten days ago.

The Fijians, who include Newport captain Simon Raiwalui among the squad that are likely to play against Pooler, were at The Park yesterday afternoon to see how conditions were.

And, surprisingly, given the monsoon storms which lashed South Wales on Saturday and led to Pooler's match Beddau being called off, the ground is quite hard and could do with a little watering!

Pooler team manager Tony Clarke is confident that his side will not be fazed by the task ahead tonight against the world's eighth best side.

In fact Clarke firmly believes they can give Fiji more than a warm-up ahead of the South Sea Island side's game against Wales this Saturday.

"This is a mouth-watering game for the players and the fans and one we want to win. Of course we know and fully understand the size of the task in hand, but as a club we want to keep a winning run going and that includes friendly fixtures. They all add to the momentum," said Clarke.

Fiji have already inspected the field and trained on the famous Park ahead of the big game.

The touring party was there on Sunday and were guests of honour at a Sunday dinner hosted by the club, but come tonight any admiration will be left firmly in the changing rooms.

"We want to give the Fijians a game, that is what they have come here for.

"They hold us in high esteem and have chosen us ahead of a lot of other teams in Wales.

"We naturally want give the best possible. We are delighted to have them here," said Clarke.

Fiji are full-strength for this tour though and Clarke reckons fans are in for a real treat.

"It's going to be a great spectator game and hopefully they'll be plenty of running rugby. They're sevens specialists and if they could adopt that game to 15-man level then they would have some sort of side.

"Fans can expect lots of tries and lots of running rugby. Hopefully from us as much as them."

Pontypool play Fiji at Pontypool Park, kick off 7pm, tickets £10 and £5.
