WALES will improve against Fiji next Saturday, pledged Wales coach Steve Hansen and captain Colin Charvis after both admitted Romania gave them a stern examination in Wrexham last night.

Wales gained a 40-3 victory, but 14 of their points did not come until the closing minutes. "We always thought Romania would be tough," said Hansen. "We watched them against Ireland in their World Cup qualifier and their defence tonight was world class, I thought they played very well.

"But we'll definitely improve against Fiji. We were a bit rusty in the scrums and line outs and with our combined work against Romania.

"The line outs started shakily and we were a bit nervous. But we grew in confidence and ended quite well.

"The line out problems were more because of the new combination between thrower and jumper. There was not enough time in the week to do everything so we were not as smooth in our execution."

Charvis said: "There was a lot of pressure on us to win well, but we knew they would be a lot stronger than last year with their French players.

"It was important to see how quickly we would gel together. This was the start of a long campaign and it was important we started with a victory.

"I'm sure we'll look at the Fijians and see how they have done. They're a very strong team, and we've got to improve our combinations."
