NEWPORT'S annual Bonfire Night firework display has been rescheduled after last-minute crisis talks between the organisers, Newport council and Gwent Police.

The event was set to take place on November 5 at Tredegar House. But because of safety concerns, it has been moved to Saturday November 9, following consultation with the city council and police.

Last year's display began late because the traffic gridlock approaching the park meant that many spectators were still arriving when the fuses should have been lit. Families who had tickets were barred as the expected attendance more than doubled to 12,000 people - all using one gate to get in.

Dave Lippiat, organiser of Newport Round Table's £6,000 firework display, said: "It's in the interests of everybody that we've made this late decision.

"We caused horrific traffic problems last year and this year we've been liasing with the police and the city council.

"The traffic management plan we had in place was something they still weren't happy with. Business traffic would still be on the roads on Tuesday night and people would get held up again, so we've moved it to Saturday. There's more car parking because Panasonic and Lloyds TSB will let us use their car parks, there are two access roads, there will be two gates open. Basically the whole thing's been scaled up, and we would like as many people as possible to come along.

"We've traditionally always done it on November 5 but it's time to break with tradition. "All tickets sold will be valid on the new date, but anyone who cannot come on the Saturday and who has purchased a ticket can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund."

Councillor Glyn Jarvis, Cabinet member for culture and recreation, said: "We've worked with the Round Table to ensure the smooth running of the evening."

No one from Gwent police was available for comment as the Argus went to Press.

* Tickets are £4 for adults and £2 for children, and are available in advance from Newport Library, Newport Centre and Tredegar House. Gates are open from 5pm and the fireworks begin at 7pm.
