GLANMOR Griffiths is set to slim down his roles with the Welsh Rugby Union now that a new group chief executive has been appointed for the body.

Griffiths, who has jointly held the positions of WRU chairman and treasurer as well as chairman of the Millennium Stadium PLC company until now, said he was 'delighted' with the appointment of David Moffett to the top job.

And now his triple jobs, which have been questioned over the last year or so, are likely to be no more.

Griffiths announced at last April's extraordinary general meeting of the Union that once a group chief executive was in place, he would work as treasurer of the new 18-man WRU board, which replaces the general committee next year, while continuing as Millennium Stadium company boss.

Doncaster-born Moffett, the former head of Sport England, will effectively run the WRU administratively.

Griffiths added: "I am delighted that we have uncovered such a dynamic and experienced man to take on the vital new role of Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive.

"In David, who has held high-ranking sporting posts in Australia, New Zealand and England, we have a man with great management skill and experience."

Moffett will also be in the chair of a new six-man executive board, as outlined at the EGM, which will oversee the day-to-day running of the Union's business and also gets a seat on the Millennium Stadium PLC board as a director.

The 55-year-old's wealth of experience includes being an executive director of the New South Wales Rugby Union in 1992.

In November 1999, he became chief executive of Australia's National Rugby League before joining Sport England 10 months ago.

Moffett announced earlier this month that he was stepping down from that post, having been responsible for driving through a modernisation plan, and the reason for that is now clear as he joins the Union at a time of great debate over the clubs v provincial rugby plans for the future of the game.
