A MOTHER who saw police at a blood-stained site on Newport Bridge learned hours later it was the spot where her son collapsed and died.

Shaun Evans, (pictured) 34, of Ringland, Newport, was found in a pool of blood by shocked commuters at 7.55am on Monday.

One hour later his mother, Sue Evans, 54, was on the bus to Newport when she saw police at the site.

She said: "I was on the bus going over the bridge and I saw all the police there and the blood.

"I didn't know it was my son. I cannot go over that bridge again." She learned the news after police informed her other son, Mark, at his work. Police say Shaun suffered a massive heart attack.

Mrs Evans said: "It's come as a total shock to all of us. He was still so young. "When I first heard, I thought he had been attacked, as he had a cut on his head. Also, he had a new mobile and that is still missing. We'd like to thank the people who tried to save him, we just wish they had been successful."

Shaun, an employment centre manager, of Hendre Farm Drive, was on his way to the railway station to catch a train to Bridgend.

He was seen by passers-by bleeding from the head and mouth and lying on the pavement. Two council refuse workers pulled over their lorry and desperately tried to help, while other passers-by dialled 999.

Shaun was taken by ambulance to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His family said they were not aware of Shaun having any health problems. Shaun was a big rugby fan and his favourite team, Newport RFC, has donated a tracksuit and T-shirt for him to be cremated in on Monday.

Yesterday brother Mark, 33, said: "He watched a lot of rugby and was a big fan of Newport.

"He loved partying and having a pint, and was into the music of Queen. "We are a well-known family and a lot of people on the estate will miss him. "He lived for the day and was very friendly and easy-going. He would do anything for anyone and his firm found him very reliable."
