AS manager Tim Harris put it, Newport County had two agendas last night - to win the game and to win it in style.

One out of two wasn't bad and at least Harris' side got the win they badly needed to boost their flagging confidence, but they took their time wrapping up their Dr Martens Cup win - and needed extra time to do so.

On the same night that Newport's FA Cup vanquishers Team Bath qualified for the first round proper of the cup with a 4-3 win over Horsham on penalties, County were grateful to still be in their own competition with a first round win.

The Bath students' 3-0 win over County has severely dented Newport's confidence, but a good run in this competition will go some way to restoring it again.

Harris said: "It was a poor game of football. It was all about confidence at. We didn't play well but if we had scored a few goals in the first twenty minutes, it would have been a totally different performance.

"They made it difficult for us and we had four or five clear chances in the first-half.

"The important thing was to win the game, the second thing was to win it in style, which we didn't do.

"But it's the second clean-sheet and we have two wins on the bounce, but it will be a different game on Saturday."

Having overcome their Dr Martens League Western Division opponents, County now face Havant and Waterlooville at home on Saturday in the league's Premier Division and they can expect much tougher opposition than the Clevedon outfit.

It took 94 minutes until captain Matt Rose latched onto a Scott Walker cross and beat Clevedon Town goalkeeper Steve Weaver with his shot.

The sigh of relief could be heard round the ground. It had been a long night for the 280 hardy souls who had watched some poor cup football - the home side could not hit the target and the underdogs wanted to stop them.

After Rose had put County 1-0 up, Walker was again the provider as Neil Davis headed home his cross and made the game safe.

But County should have been well ahead at half-time as they created a string of chances, with Richard French and Steve Cowe making their presence felt in front of goal even if they couldn't find the net.

Defender Billy Clark had the best chance to score when his second-half header from a Cowe cross went over the bar.

But, over ninety minutes, probably the most dazzling display was the impromptu fireworks spectacle from the estate behind Spytty Park and the majority of the crowd was grateful for the distraction.
