NEWPORT Mavericks may not be gunning for the Conference League title themselves but there is no doubt that they will have a big hand in where it eventually goes this weekend.

Three meetings are organised at Hayley Stadium for tomorrow and Sunday - the Sunday fixture is a double-header - and both the sides which are fighting for the crown will be visiting.

Newport, who will have Scott Pegler as their lead rider, have an incentive to grab a few points this weekend as they currently lie in tenth place in the Conference table and a couple of wins could move them above King's Lynn and into ninth.

However, Peterborough and Sheffield have other things on their minds and, for the Mavericks to land victory over either will be need everyone firing on all cylinders.

Peterborough currently top the table on 37 points and visit Hayley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It is a 2pm start but the club will be open from 10am so that fans can watch the final Grand Prix of the summer at Stadium Australia live in the clubhouse.

Then, on Sunday, second-placed Sheffield, one point behind Peterborough, take on the Mavericks (1pm) followed immediately by a match against bottom of the table Wimbledon.

Peterborough, however, will have the advantage over Sheffield on Sunday. Where as the second-placed side take on the Mavericks in their final match during the early afternoon, Peterborough's last meeting of the season, away to Mildenhall, is fixed to start at 6pm when they will know the score from Hayley Stadium.

That, in itself, gives the weekend action added spice and puts an emphasis on the Mavericks to do well in both meetings.

Newport promoter Tim Stone said: "The league title will be decided this weekend and, although it's not ideal (to have meetings in successive days), we have to get these fixtures done. It's a bumper weekend."

Entrance costs tomorrow includes being able to watch the Australian Grand Prix in the clubhouse while Sunday's gate fee covers both of the Mavericks' meetings.
