HIGH speed connections, no charge, millions of locations - the people of north Gwent can now embark upon a virtual journey when they visit Tredegar Library thanks to the new broadband Internet service, the People's Network.

Tredegar Library is the first of Blaenau Gwent's libraries to benefit from the government's People's Network project, with the other libraries following suit. Abertillery Library is scheduled for change next month.

All libraries should be providing the quick, free internet service by the end of the year via 56 new computer terminals.

Users in Tredegar have a 10 megabit connection to the internet meaning access is ten times faster.

The mayor of Blaenau Gwent officially launched the Network and the morning of the launch saw 17 new users register.

A folder containing information detailing safe use codes for the Internet is issued to safeguard young Internet users and reassure parents or guardians. Consent forms also need to be signed by parents or guardians before minors will be allowed access.

Councillor Nigel Daniels, executive member for Leisure Services, said: "We are pleased to be leading the field in the advent of broadband technology for libraries. Keeping abreast of new technology is vital in providing access to information and services that are rapidly becoming accessible via the Internet.

"Seventeen new customers in one morning is testament to the value of the new service. We are anticipating a high demand for the service in all our libraries by customers eager to use the terminals for business, education and recreation. Customers can set up e-mail addresses and shop online.

"The People's Network is ensuring that Blaenau Gwent Libraries are providing an up-to-date and relevant service that complements the traditional literary and information service associated with libraries."

The Lottery's New Opportunities Fund has paid for funded the new computers and Blaenau Gwent Council has provided priority broadband facilities for the libraries.
