JOHN Hartson could be set to quit Celtic in a switch back across the border.

Middlesborough and Everton are set to swoop for the Wales striker in January.

Hartson, who has been into to see Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, revealed: "I'm frustrated being on the bench."

The 27-year-old, who was awesome during Wales' Euro 2004 qualifying win over Italy in Cardiff last week, said he has 'a problem' with being a constant substitute for his club.

The 32-times capped striker, who made his international debut in 1995 against Bulgaria added: "I've held talks with Martin O'Neill and he knows how I feel."

Celtic boss O'Neill paid Coventry City £6 million for Hartson 14 months ago but has installed Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton at the top of the Parkhead pecking order.

"There's been no single 'showdown' talks," insisted O'Neill who again left Hartson kicking his heels yesterday after being named as a substitute in Celtic's 4-1 victory over Hearts.

The Hartson revelations come at a time when Premiership bosses are eagerly waiting the re-opening of the transfer window in January.

"I don't want to leave Celtic," said Hartson.

His agent, Jon Bartlett, added: "John wants first team football and its up to Celtic whether he leaves but he is not content with the bench indefinitely."

Everton boss David Moyes is leading the chase for the Welshman with Middlesborough manager Steve McClaren also keen to tempt the Welsh star to the club.
