SCHOOLS that encourage healthier lifestyles for their pupils were recognised at a special ceremony.

Four primary schools in Risca and Newbridge were among nine schools that joined a pilot school health scheme, launched by Caerphilly council and the Caerphilly Health Alliance earlier this year.

Youngsters from Pentwynmawr Primary in Newbridge, Risca Primary, and Ty-Isaf and Ty Sign Infant schools in Risca, were at the ceremony in Bedwas this week.

Nutrition was one of the main themes of the scheme and many schools established fruit tuck shops or set up school nutrition action groups.

Some also worked with pupils and parents to improve the content of lunch boxes and others organised special health weeks.

Councillor Phil Bevan, the council's cabinet member for education, said: "These schools must be congratulated on their efforts as it is very important that we encourage local children to lead a healthier way of life."

Schools also put together portfolios of evidence as part of their involvement, which were on display at the event on Friday.

Ten more schools in the county borough will now join the scheme, including Ynysddu Primary and Penllwyn Primary in Pontllanfraith.
