CWMBRAN Park's Kevin Wall came through intense pressure to clinch the top prize Open Singles championship at the 74th Newport Open Bowls tournament last Sunday.
Wall was up against Paul Edinborough, of Whiteheads, for the crown and managed to get away to a 9-3 lead at one stage.
These international teammates had battled their way to the Final by disposing of Derek Parsons 21-11 and Mike Doody (Machen) 21-8 in their respective semi finals and a large crowd had gathered to witness the shoot-out.
Edinborough would not give in and fought back and lost 21-15 to his opponent. The feast of bowls also saw the ever-popular Gerald Oakley Shield for junior bowlers going to Aneurin Oakley (Whiteheads) after he defeated Gavin Abraham (NAC) 13-6 for a third successive victory in the competition.
The inaugural mixed pairs competition final was fought out between husband and wife team Rob and Anne Oakley (Whiteheads) and the young duo of Aneurin Oakley (Whiteheads) and Natasha Berry (Unattached).
The young guns gained the upper hand and refused to bow the their elder opponents running out 12-10 winners.
