NEWPORT'S bruised sprint king Christian Malcolm revealed his Commonwealth Games heartache last night.

The 22-year-old star suffered his second gut-wrenching agony at the City of Manchester of Stadium as Wales finished last in the 4x100m relay.

It couldn't have been a worse end to Malcolm's Manchester after coming home last in the 200m men's final on Monday night.

But he pledged to put the most difficult year in his sporting life behind him and bounce back with a vengence at the European Championships in Munich next week.

The Eveswell man, who ran with Newport cousin Kevin Williams, the city's Doug Turner and Steve Shalders, revealed: "I have got to be honest and say to you that I'm the hurt is burning up inside of me.

"I've done well to get two Commonwealth finals considering the bad year that I have had because I've been ill.

"But it's still so frustrating to know that what I could achieve on my day but it didn't just happen for me.

"I have many good years without injury or illness so in a way I'm lucky that it's only been the last year that hasn't been so good."

Malcolm, though, took some consolation that the gold went to England and Mancunian mate Darren Campbell who lives near Newport in Marshfield.

The Welshman, who saw his friend run the last glorious leg to send the 38,000 crowd into a hometown frenzy by adding to his 200m bronze, added: "No one deserves it more than him.

"He has struggled so much over the last two years and to come back like that in front of his home crowd is fantastic. They should make a film on him!"
