NEWBRIDGE have swooped to boost their already strong Welsh First Division squad by signing three newcomers, including a South African wing.

The Southern Hemisphere player is Dawid Venter, who joined his girlfriend in this country only recently and is based at Monmouth.

The others are lock Mike Peard, from Rumney, and experienced centre Jason Lewis, on dual registration from Pontypridd.

"Venter, 22, has played for Natal Under-21s and for three decent club sides in South Africa," said backs coach Jonathan Westwood. "He was top try scorer in the division in which he played.

"It's a bit of a gamble as we haven't seen him play in a competitive match but he has impressed in training."

Wing was a position Newbridge needed extra cover for alongside Paul Collett, Alan Harries, new recruit Gareth Lane and centre/wing Gareth Turner.

Peard, the son of former international referee Les Peard, captained Rumney last season. He is from Gwent and based in Newport with the police.

"He's a big lad with enormous potential," said Westwood. "He worked with Spike (forwards coach Mike Watkins) at Rumney and is a quality player who I am sure we can get the best out of."

Newbridge had numerous second row problems last season because of injuries and at one stage were down to just one player, Anthony Edwards, and he was carrying a complaint.

Now they have Edwards, Peard, Christian Penny, recently signed from Cross Keys, and back row men such as Matthew Griffin and Geraint Gladwyn who can play at lock. Westwood acknowledged Newbridge already had "quality centres" but said Lewis, who may not be regularly available, added cover and experience.

Meanwhile, the club are to lose tight head prop Mike Spencer, who has stated his intention to take a year out, and are looking for front row cover.
