NEWPORT County will join the five other Welsh clubs playing in the English pyramid at a meeting with football chiefs to talk over new transfer legislation that FIFA will impose in September.

The new laws will forbid County and their fellow Welsh clubs from buying from or selling players to sides in their own league except during designated transfer windows.

The rule will mean clubs, including the Nationwide League teams, cannot do transfer deals with sides in different countries except during those 'windows' in the close season and in January.

So, apart from the two designated times, the Welsh clubs can only buy men who play in Wales.

County play in the Dr Martens Premier League, part of the English pyramid, but are under the jurisdiction of the Football Association of Wales.

But the FAW are currently in negotiation with their English counterparts to discuss if County and the five other Welsh clubs can have special dispensation because they play in the English system.

English FA chiefs discussed the issue with the Football League last night and Welsh football's top brass will meet with the six clubs - Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, Merthyr Tydfil, Colwyn Bay and County - on July 30 so the teams can raise their concerns.

Newport chairman Wallace Brown said: "If the new legislation is passed, it will be grossly unfair for us and the other Welsh clubs and it is a major concern."
