IT may not have been a glorious summer so far, but Newport people have still created a triumphant floral spectacular.

For the new city is full of colourful displays created for the annual Newport in Bloom contest.

The results have just been announced, and tomorrow judges of Wales in Bloom 2002 will visit. It's the first year we've entered the city category in that competition.

John Woods, technical officer for grounds and countryside services with Newport city council, said: "Once again we have been really impressed with the quality of entrants we have had for this year's Newport in Bloom.

"The amount of work and creativity has been astounding, making this an incredibly hard competition to judge."

And the winners are...

Class 1 - Best front garden. 1: Maureen Crocker, Tregarn Road, Langstone (pictured). 2: Gloria Byrne, Monnow Way, Bettws. 3: Alban Watts, St David's Court, Marshfield.

Class 2 - Best flower display using containers, tubs, baskets. 1: Matthew Barnes, Stockton Road. 2: Jim Figg, Westgate Court, Caerleon. 3: Wendy Evans, Chepstow Road, Langstone.

Class 3 - Best flower display - community/neighbourhood. 1: Tredegar House Caravan Club Site, Tredegar House. 2: Lighthouse Park, St Brides, Wentloog.

Class 4 - Best Flower Display - Shops. 1: Albert E Hicks, Grafton Road. 2: Ferris Cafe, Newport Bus Station. 3: Lilies Florist, Duckpool Road. Class 5: Best Flower Display - Hotels/Public Houses. 1: The Red Lion, Backhall Street, Caerleon. 2: The Groes Wen, Penhow. 3: Roman Lodge Hotel, Ponthir Road, Caerleon.

Class 7 - Best-maintained churchyard. 1: St Phillip's Church, Jenkin Street. 2: St Mary's Church, Marshfield. 3: Rogerstone and Bassaleg Community Cemetery.

Class 8 - Best flower display - Community/health centres/surgeries. 1: Rogerstone Welfare Grounds. 2: Kensington Court Day Centre, Oaklands Road, Eveswell.

Class 9 - Best flower display - Infants/junior schools. 1: Rockfield Nursery School, Rockfield Street. 2: Gaer Infants School, Melfort Road. Joint third: Fairoak Nursery School, Church Road, and Rogerstone Primary School, Ebenezer Drive.

Class 10 - Best flower display - Secondary schools. 1: Caerleon Comprehensive School.

Class 11 - Best flower display - Residential/nursing homes. 1: Pant-y-Celyn, Blaen-y-pant Crescent, Malpas. 2: Kirby Daniel Court, Charlotte Green, Pill. 3: Alexandra Court, Alexandra Road, Pill.

Class 12 - Best flower display - Colleges/hospitals. 1: St Cadoc's Hospital, Caerleon.
