Allt-yr-yn mixed 'A' tennis team continued their good start to the season with a win over Cwmbran 'A' in the Cymru Kitchens tennis league. The match finished level at 2 events each, so under Gwent LTA rules the match was decided on sets won, and this went in favour of the Newport side by 6 sets to 4.
In the opening round of matches the Allt-yr-yn pair of Lisa Mogford and Gary James produced a fine alround display to see off Cwmbran pair of L Bridgeman and Richard Stafford in straight sets 6-2 6-2.
Kim Vaughan and C James were also in sparkling form for the home side, as they defeated Cwmbran's C Dennehy and Andy Thirsk 6-2 6-2.
In the second round reversed matches Allt-yr-yn's Mogford and James lost in 3 sets to Dennehy and Thirsk, while Vaughan and James also lost in a third set tie break decider against Bridgeman and Stafford.
In the ladies premier division Allt-yr-yn turned on the heat beat local rivals Stow Park be 4 events to 0.
Allt-ry-yn's Gaynor Edmunds and Kim Vaughan along with Dawn Pritchard and Vickey Bailey were in magnificent form throughout.
Cwmbran ladies 'A' gave an accomplished display with a 4-0 win at the expense of Allt-yr-yn 'B' in their premier fixture.
In the ladies second division Magor and Undy 'A' had few alarms as they overcame Firbank to register a 4-0 win. Magor partnership of Carol Shepherd and Sian Jones won a tough opening event with a 3 set victory over Firbank pair of Claire Cox and Sandra Pickering. Shepherd and Jones went from strength to strength in the final match to see off the challenge of Firbank's Kathy Gin and Lyndsey Dunn to win in straight sets.
Magor's Janice Orum and Josie Smith kept their opponents at full stretch beating defeat Gin and Dunn 6-3 6-3 and then finishing with a straight sets win over Cox and Pickering 7-5 6-4.
In the men's first division Chepstow produced a 3-1 win over Crickhowell. Chepstow pairing of Steve Brown and Wayne Jones were the backbone to their teams success, taking both events in straight sets.
Chepstow pair of Paul Hogan and Paul Rees cruised menacingly through their opening match with and excellent 6-1 6-2 score over Botting and Ryan, but suffered a 3 sets defeat at the hands of Kerrison and Ashton.
