GWENT'S only professional Triathlete Anneliese Heard says a top ten finish at this month's Commonwealth Games could spearhead her charge for Olympic glory in 2004.
Talented Heard, from Newport, caught the eyes of the famous French pro-team Montpellier last year.
They were quick to sign the gifted athlete to their books and the double junior world champion gold medalist is now enjoying her first season as a senior triathlete with the Gaelic outfit.
Despite a busy European programme which has seen the star hop from one country to another in the space of two-days Heard revealed all her attentions were now firmly on the Commonwealth Games from her training base in Bath.
"I'm now focusing all my training on the Games. I've only just come back from a shin injury, but that's starting to settle and my running fitness is beginning to come back. As for my cycling and swimming there's been no problems," a satisfied Heard told the Argus. The 20-year-old is oozing confidence after an encouraging start to her senior career.
But, with maturity beyond her young years, she knows success in Manchester won't come without a fight.
"It's going to be tough there. This is my first Commonwealth Games and some of the best triathletes come from the Commonwealth countries. The Australian team will be favourites, the entire squad is strong," Heard admitted.
"A medal would be nice, but it's going to be hard. If I get a good swim and bike ride then a top five finish would be great. Realistically though a top ten finish is what I am aiming for."
Heard, who is contemplating a move back to her Newport home next year, admitted that fortune plays a big part in making it to a rostrum finish.
"Luck has a massive say in the sport. Unlike the 100m where you can dictate what is going to happen, things like the weather or a puncture to your bike are completely out of your hands in the triathlete."
Heard heads to Manchester on July 24. The three-stage event involves swimming, cycling and running and begins on August 4 in the Salford Quays district of the city.
