THOUSANDS of people were entertained by an exhibition of young talent at the third Bettws carnival on Saturday - by attractions which included Newport RFC's newest big-name signing.

South African Percy Montgomery chatted to Newport fans as he met crowds packed into the Bettws High School field.

The carnival-goers watched demonstrations and enjoyed the fair to the music of the Prince of Wales Band, who led a parade from the shopping centre. Among the acts on show was local pop group, Levin, with 21-year-old Jade Evans as lead singer.

Mr Montgomery was there with fellow Newport rugby players Llyr Lane, Scott Williams and Gareth Gravell.

And although he's a popular local councillor, Bettws ward's Noel Trigg could not escape his fate in the stocks - he was pelted with sponges.

But it was all in a good cause. The event was organised by Bettws Link, who were raffling DVD and CD players to support projects in the area such as a women's forum and a multi-play area for children.

A number of lorries followed the Prince of Wales Band, and the Harry Potter float, featuring wizards and witches, won the Float of the Year competition.

Margaret Rooney, 60, from Bettws, said: "It is better than last year as there are more events and there is a lot for the children to do."
