THE first night of Pontypool's Gig In the Park event saw crowds entertained by Welsh heavy metal singer Ivor Beynon - Lord of Steel, whose legendary, frenzied act had the audience baying for more.
Bands Kalm and My So Called Friends also played. A total of more than 20 bands will rock the town at the three-day Gig in the Park at Pontypool Park which ends tomorrow.
The event is one of a number leading up to Pontypool carnival on Saturday. Today, children were gathering their cuddly toys at the park for a Teddy Bears' Picnic.
Young athletes will be going for gold at a mini-Olympics and going for goals at a five-a-side football tournament there on tomorrow afternoon. In the evening, local wordsmiths will be waxing lyrical in the Poet of Pontypool final at the town's museum.
On Friday, primary schoolchildren will scrum down for the ten-a-side rugby finals starting at 5.30pm and free snowboarding lessons will tempt people to the ski centre.
Finally comes carnival day, with the procession starting from the leisure centre at 2pm on Saturday, preceded by a Party in the Market from 9.30am.
Sponsored by Eastern Valley Housing Association and our sister paper The Free Press, the week-long Golden Jubilee Carnival has been organised by Pontypool community council and Torfaen council.
