CHRISTIAN Malcolm finished second in the 200m at the Welsh Games last night then admitted he is facing a tough race against illness to get 100 per cent fit for the Commonwealth Games.

Malcolm ran 21.02 seconds behind winner Dominic Demerite from the Bahamas, who won in a time of 20.79 secs.

But the Eveswell flier only finished taking medication for a virus, that has hampered his season, at the weekend.

The 23-year-old rates himself as only '80 per cent' fit and although the debilitating virus is behind him, he is doubling up to run in both the 100m and 200m at this weekend's AAA championships in an effort to boost his racing fitness.

Having earlier finished second behind US sprinter Ken Brokkenburr in the 100m, Malcolm has just over a fortnight before the Commonwealth Games begin in Manchester, as he looks to add gold to the silver he won in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Malcolm, who raced for Cardiff AC at the weekend in Edinburgh, is now looking to run as many races as possible to build his fitness and admitted he has been struggling with illness since the Aqua-Pura International at the start of the season.

He said: "It's starting to come together now, but I'm still only 80 per cent fit and and it's going to be close to get 100 per cent right in time for Manchester.

"It's frustrating and a big let down. I feel strong, I've been doing plenty of circuits in the gym but I don't feel fit.

"Now I've just got to work at it this weekend, but I'll be resting for the rest of this week."

Malcolm faces in-form Dwain Chambers and Mark Lewis-Francis over 100m at the AAA Championships in Birmingham on Saturday.
