BEDWAS today issued a warning to high-flying rivals Pontypool ahead of their game at the Bridge Field tomorrow: "Don't come here expecting us to lie down."
Pontypool know that if they win their last four games they could, depending on how First Division title rivals Aberavon perform in their last four, clinch a Welsh/Scottish League play-off place.
Aberavon should win at home to Bonymaen tomorrow and by a big margin at Merthyr on Wednesday, May 1.
But then comes a difficult game at Tondu (May 8) and a finish at Dunvant (May 11). After Bedwas, Pontypool's remaining three games are all at home, to Tondu (April 30), Whitland (May 4) and Bonymaen (May 7).
It will be close and could even come down to try count, but first Pontypool have to win at Bedwas, and that may not be easy.
"We won't be lying down," said Bedwas coach Steve Law. "We know Pontypool are a local side going for the title, but they will have to come down and win it. "We will give it everything.
"We have two games left, against Pontypool and Newbridge, two big local derbies, and we're not looking to make it easy for either side, especially after losing to both away from home. "If we play to our potential we expect to be very competitive, but if we continue to play as we have been recently, we've got no chance.
"We owe it to the club and the supporters to raise ourselves for this game and if you can't motivate yourself against Pontypool, who can you motivate yourself for?" Pontypool team manager Tony Clark commented: "Aberavon's defeat at Whitland has thrown everything back into the melting pot and we simply have to win our last four games to keep the pressure on them."
Two of Aberavon's four games come after Pooler have completed their fixtures and Clark is unhappy with that.
"You should never have a side involved in a promotion or relegation issue completing the season after other rivals," he said.
"It enables them to know just what they have to do. "But things have been against us all season. As the fixtures are, the teams who face us have their rest week the week before, which gives them extra time to prepare and to come and watch us and plan.
"The bottom line is we have to keep on winning, but last week's results have given us a huge lift and, with plans soon to be announced on our community initiative and an Academy, there's a real feel-good factor here now."
Of the Bedwas game, he added: "It will be very tough. They have had a terrific season after winning promotion and were in the top two for the large part."
