MERLIN'S Meander is a growing network of artists that now numbers close to 30. The 'meander' is now firmly based in north Gwent, and visitors are encouraged, with a map and information booklet, to go on a tour of places which interest them, with local, quality art and craft as the central theme.
The idea came from South Africa after an artist from Mid Wales visited the area and marvelled at how local art was being marketed in sparsely populated areas - so well, in fact, that the Midland Meander in South Africa is now generating some £20 million every year for the area in tourist revenue.
One of the scheme's supporters, Alan Cunningham, says the 2002 version of Merlin's Meander promises to be well supported after last year's 'disaster' due to foot-and-mouth. He said: "Already this year there are about eight new galleries in Mid Wales.
"There is a spirit of optimism about the position of our artists in the economy here, and a growing respect for their importance.
"Merlin's Meander is there to help them to have a good future, and along with them, all the tourist service industries and other attractions of the area."
The grand opening of Merlin's Meander takes place on Saturday, May 4, to be followed by a month-long exhibition representing the interests of this year's membership, at Erwood Station Craft Centre.
The main gallery and the railway coach galleries will be devoted to a display of what is best in art and craft.
