NEWBRIDGE pivot Jason Williams (pictured) is within reach of becoming Wales' greatest league points scorer - but he refuses to think about it.

His 354 - a personal best - this season has taken him to a career total of 2,220, just 43 adrift of Wales' goal-kicking legend and top international points scorer Neil Jenkins.

Williams, who scored 33 points against Merthyr last week (two tries, ten conversions and a penalty) needs to average almost 15 points in his last three games to pass Jenkins, provided the fit-again Cardiff ace doesn't add to his tally.

But he says the only thing that matters is Newbridge winning their remaining matches and staying in the top three. He actually wishes he didn't know about the points situation. "I never thought I'd have a chance to achieve something like this and I had never thought about it until someone told me after the Cross Keys game earlier this season that I was approaching 2,000 points," said Williams.

"After that it was on my mind and I had a terrible game against Tondu. "So I wish I hadn't heard about this now. If I can do it with the last kick of the season at Whitland, give me a shout then.

"Meanwhile it won't make any difference to how myself or the club approach the next three vital games.

"We have a game plan to keep us in third spot or maybe higher if Pontypool and/or Aberavon slip up and that's all that matters."

Williams' points this season could also take him above Brett Davey's league record of 393 in a season for Caerphilly.

But he is unlikely to be the new leading points scorer as Stuart Harris (Llandovery) has 25 more to his name at the moment, standing on 376, and also has three games to play. "He's consistently scored a try every other game whereas I've only scored six this year," added the Newbridge man.

Williams' 11 kicks out of 11 against Merthyr was his best ever, eclipsing all eight attempts for Pontypool against Cross Keys and a perfect ten for Monmouthshire against Breconshire.

Newbridge are away to Blackwood tomorrow and Williams added: "It's one all our supporters want to win.

"Pontypool, Cross Keys and Blackwood are the matches we love to win. We've lost twice to Pontypool this season, beaten Cross Keys twice and we're one up against Blackwood.

"Another win on Saturday would make it 4-2 in our favour and that's a lot better than 3-3." Blackwood coach Mark Thomas commented: "It's true both sets of fans seem to build this fixture up as the biggest of the season because we are so close.

"But I don't think our players all feel the same because they are not all Blackwood men through and through.

"We have done particularly well against them at home in the last couple of years, though I thought they were a cracking side when they beat us over there. "But with a top performance I think we can pip them.

"Our discipline will have to be spot on otherwise we know Jason Williams will slot over the penalties.

"We have great respect for him and to be in sight of Neil Jenkins' record is a fantastic achievement for a player in our division."
