NEWPORT professional Paul Mayo showed once again that there is still plenty of life in the veteran former European Tour player as he lifted the South Wales PGA title for the Graham Poor Memorial Trophy for the third time with a series of classy displays at Royal Porthcawl.

The twice Welsh champion and one time British amateur title holder clinched the crown with a three and one victory in the 18 hole final over Ashburnham assistant Martin Stimson.

Earlier Mayo had been made to work hard for a last green quarter-final success over Matthew Prior from the St Mary's Club, Pencoed, and then showed a clean pair of heels to young ex-amateur star Neil Matthews of Shirenewton, Gwent, running out a convincing six and five winner before taking the scalp of Stimson to complete a successful championship.

In the event, sponsored by office space firm Regus, Mayo's assistant Paul Harris also reached the quarter-finals before being defeated on the home green by Cardiff's Adam Constable, who subsequently went down by two and one to Stimson.

In the final Mayo played exceptionally well and got off to a flying start, winning the first three holes. He suffered a couple of three putt lapses in the middle of a round but was still two under par at the finish.

"I am playing pretty well and really enjoyed that championship. I am extremely busy at the Newport club but hope to play in some West Region events during the season," said Mayo.
