GWENT competitors were very much to the fore in the Welsh Pro-Am Alliance meeting over the St Mellons course.
Parc-based Darren Griffiths, the son of former world snooker champion Terry, returned a splendid 69 to finish runner-up in the professional section just two strokes behind winner James Lee, the Cardiff assistant. Third place was shared by Peterstone's Paul Glynn and Matthew Dearden of Hensol Academy.
And there were three Gwent pairs who tied for third place in the better-ball competition. Newport father and son John and Richard Dinsdale together with Paul Molton and Steve Smith, who also play at the Rogerstone club, and St Pierre couple Biccy Singh and Giuseppe Licata had scores of 65, four behind Cardiff's James Lee and Tom Puck who won the competition.
Furthermore Licata and John Dinsdale tied for the best amateur gross award with scores of 73 while Licata won the net prize with a score of 68, two ahead of three players - Lyn Woodhouse of Greenmeadow, Cwmbran, Newport's Hugh Rowlands and Jason Puck of Cardiff.
And as if that wasn't enough for the Gwent cabinet, Len Hill and Bill Lewis of Newport collected 20 stableford points in the afternoon nine-hole competition to tie for top place with Leighton Brooks and Dean Milton, from Wenvoe.
