NEWPORT are set to lose A internationals Peter Buxton and Matthew Watkins. Both are out of contract and Buxton is heading into England while Watkins could be on his way west.
Gloucester, lying second to Leicester in the Zurich Premiership, will announce today that Buxton, from neighbouring Cheltenham, has signed a three-year contract with them. And Watkins admits he is having talks with Heineken Cup semi-finalists Llanelli and could be set for Stradey Park.
The reasons for Buxton's impending departure from Rodney Parade after two terrific seasons is to improve his chances of playing for England.
He appeared twice for England A this season, against Scotland and Ireland, after being capped at under-19 and under-21 level.
The 6ft 4in, 17st blindside flanker is being groomed for a full cap, and his hopes will rise if he is playing regularly against all his rivals.
"There has been interest from a few English clubs, one more than any other, and I want to get it sorted out quickly now," said Buxton ahead of the Gloucester announcement.
"It has nothing to do with Newport because their offer is probably better than any other." His departure is a massive blow to Newport after his tremendous ball carrying efforts. He made 25 appearances last season and 25 out of 26 this season, Newport coach Ian McIntosh a big fan.
Watkins is a different case, his likely move due to his preference for the outside centre position.
McIntosh picks him in his Wales A wing position whereas Watkins, with Newport for five years, wants the number 13 position where it seems Llanelli are prepared to play him. "I enjoy playing at centre and being there recently again gave me a bit of life. But now I'm back on the wing it's disappointing," said Watkins.
"I am enjoying it at Newport and they are probably the best club in Wales, but I want to play centre.
"I've had talks with Llanelli and also with Leeds, but I'm going to take my time over a decision."
Newport owner Tony Brown is disappointed, but points to Wales under-21 centres Hal Luscombe and Nathan Brew coming through as well as the return of Jason Jones-Hughes and Rhys Jones, another under-21 cap, in the back row.
