POLICE are hunting the killers of five racing pigeons found with their heads ripped off.
The grim discovery was made yesterday by their owner, Ray Nichols, pictured with the birds, and his grandson at their loft behind Alma Street, Abertillery.
A sixth bird, which had serious injuries, had to be put down. All the birds were male pedigrees used for breeding.
A devastated Mr Nichols, 60, of Edward Street, Abertillery - who has raced pigeons for over 40 years - last night appealed for witnesses.
The former Six Bells miner and member of Cwmtillery Racing Club, said: "It was terrible. I could hear some of my birds flying around and noticed the padlock was broken and the door had been forced. Inside we saw the birds had been killed with their heads ripped off.
"They attacked another pigeon whose head has been ripped - he is still alive but we will have to put him out of his misery.
"Craig was close to tears and so was I. Whoever did this is sick and I hope they are found."
Police are appealing for information and can be contacted on 01495 212021.
* Earlier this month a peregrine falcon was found beheaded at The British former pit site in Talywain.
