PONTYPOOL flyhalf Byron Hayward will be looking to add another flurry of points to his season's tally away at Merthyr tomorrow.
The inspirational points-scoring machine broke through the 300 barrier for the first time this season when he nailed 16 of his side's 41 points against Llandovery last Friday. And the former Wales flyhalf says he has no plans to stop there.
"306 is nice, but we can't afford to rest as the season is by no means over. They've been some important points and we're still in there with a chance of the number one spot in Division One.
"We've been playing some cracking rugby recently, especially off the back of the defeat against Ebbw Vale. It was a bit of an anti-climax after that match, but against Llandovery we played some good attacking rugby and won comfortably in the end. We now have to keep the pressure on Aberavon - there's every chance they might slip up."
He continued: "Aberavon have some tough games ahead of them against Whitland and Tondu, both away. But to be fair they have been very professional this season and deserve to be where they are."
Ever the perfectionist, Hayward still rues the days Pooler lost to Whitland and Rumney - two defeats he believes they only have themselves to blame.
"The amount of games we have thrown away has been unbelievable. It's been disappointing because as a side we know we have the ability to kill these teams off by scoring a lot of points, but have just lacked the killer instinct. Against Merthyr three points are vital first but we must look at building on our try and points count because if Aberavon do slip up they could still have the advantage on points difference," said Hayward.
With the First Division Championship race by no means over Pooler fans can expect an explosive end of season run-in starting, hopefully, with a try feast to remember away at Merthyr this Saturday.
"We will be giving it our best because we know we are still in with a shout," Hayward declared.
Pontypool will name their side just before tomorrow's 2.30pm kick-off.
