A LARGE share of an extra £1m in Home Office cash coming to Wales to fight crime will go to Caerphilly and Newport, it was revealed yesterday.
The Safer Communities Initiative means all 22 crime and disorder reduction partnerships in Wales will get a share, but most goes to high crime areas.
Caerphilly is set to get £84,168, the third highest amount below Cardiff and Swansea.
Alan Jones, community safety officer at Caerphilly council, said he would like to see the money spent on tackling repeat victimisation, crime hot spots, commonly committed crimes and fear of crime.
Mr Jones said: "It is quite common that if you've been a victim of burglary once, your chances of being a victim again within a year are increased.
"We do have some initiatives in place, such as the Bobby Scheme, which has been very successful, and we will build on that."
Newport's crime reduction partnership will be getting £76,796, the fourth highest amount in Wales.
Councillor Bob Bright, a member of the partnership, said plans on how to spend the money would be going before the council's cabinet next Thursday.
But he said he hoped the money would be spent on tackling anti-social behaviour, and supporting the police in reducing burglaries and thefts from vehicles.
* Elsewhere in Gwent: Blaenau Gwent gets £45,898, Torfaen £44,468 and Monmouthshire £35,233.
