AN overflowing poop-scoop bin near a school is angering residents of Pontymister who say it is posing a health hazard.

They feel aggrieved as Caerphilly council urges them to tidy up after their pets but then - they claim - doesn't fulfil its responsibilities.

The authority's collection bin is on the canal below Ty sign Junior School, Pontymister, and residents say it has bags of dogs mess spilling round the sides.

The council says in its newsletter, Newsline: "We urge residents to act responsibly when it comes to disposing of litter and dogs mess.

"Children are especially susceptible when they play in areas where dogs have been allowed to foul.

"Rare infections such as toxicariasis, which can lead to serious eye problems and even blindness, can be transmitted through contact with dog faeces."

But Graham Read, (pictured) of Severn Close, Pontymister, claimed the bin has been overflowing for months.

He said: "It's disgusting. The bin is overflowing. There are bags on top and all around. I have never seen anyone empty it. The council says one thing and does another."

A spokesman for Caerphilly council said the bins were emptied on a regular basis, usually weekly, but accepted there might be times when they filled up.

He said: "The bins are cleaned on a regular basis, but there may be occasions like Bank Holidays when they fill up before we can empty them.

"We appreciate calls from residents if they see a bin overflowing and will do our best to empty them."

Anyone who knows of an overflowing bin can call the cleansing department at Caerphilly council on 01495 235336.
